The vision was there. The bridge wasn't.

When I joined a D2C lifestyle brand in a commoditised category, the creative output was all over the place. Not because the team lacked skill. Because nobody had told them what the brand actually was.

The founders had a vision. It was vivid and specific in their heads. They assumed the team could see it too.

What nobody had noticed was that the two founders held slightly different versions of that vision. Not dramatically different. But different enough that every brief the team received carried a slightly different signal depending on who it came from.

The creatives were not confused. They were just working from two different north stars at once.

The first few weeks were not about making anything. They were about sitting with the founders. Asking questions. Understanding where the brand started, where it was, where they wanted it to go. Listening for what they said with certainty and what they said differently each time.

That is when I saw the gap.

The vision was never missing. It was fully formed. It just lived inside two people who had never had to articulate it to each other in the same room at the same time.

Once that was visible, the positioning came together relatively quickly. Not because I invented it. Because I created the conditions for it to surface.

Once that was clear, everything downstream had a direction for the first time. The creative briefs held. The visuals started speaking to the same audience. The team stopped producing three different versions of the same brand simultaneously.

The founders did not have a creative problem. They had a translation problem.

The vision existed. The bridge between that vision and the people executing it did not.

That is the work that happens before any asset is made. And it is the work most brands skip entirely.
